Sodium Bisulfite as an Efficient and Inexpensive Catalyst for the One-pot Synthesis of 2,4,5-Triaryl-1<Emphasis Type="Italic">H</Emphasis>-imidazoles from Benzil or Benzoin and Aromatic Aldehydes

Summary. 2,4,5-Triaryl-1H-imidazoles were efficiently synthesized from benzoin or benzil, ammonium acetate, and aromatic or heteroaromatic aldehydes in the presence of sodium bisulfite as catalyst. The present protocol offers significant improvements for the synthesis of 2,4,5-triaryl-1H-imidazoles with regard to yield of products, simplicity in operation, and cheap catalyst.     

Multinuclear complexes containing [Pt2(μ-S)2(Ptolyl3)4] as a metallo-ligand

Treatment of [PtCl₂(Ptolyl₃)₂] (tolyl = 4-MeC₆H₄) with Na₂S in benzene gave [Pt₂(μ₂-S)₂(Ptolyl₃)₄] (1), which is soluble in common organic solvents. Reactions of (1) with various metal complexes have been studied and several polynuclear metal aggregates isolated. These new complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and n.m.r. spectroscopy. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

On‐line 2D‐LC‐ESI/MS/MS determination of rifaximin in rat serum

A highly sensitive and selective on‐line two‐dimensional reversed‐phase liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (2D‐LC‐ESI/MS/MS) method was developed and validated to determine rifaximin in rat serum by direct injection. The 2D‐LC‐ESI/MS/MS system consisted of a restricted access media column for trapping proteins as the first dimension and a Waters C₁₈ column as second dimension using 0.1% aqueous acetic acid:acetonitrile as mobile phase in a gradient elution mode. Rifampacin was used as an internal standard. The linear dynamic range was 0.5–10 ng/mL (r² > 0.998). Acceptable precision and accuracy were obtained over the calibration range. The assay was successfully used in analysis of rat serum to support pharmacokinetic studies. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Gold‐Catalyzed 1,2‐Oxoarylations of Nitriles with Pyridine‐Derived Oxides

We report the first success in the gold‐catalyzed oxoarylations of nitriles with pyridine‐derived N‐oxides using gold carbenes as initiators. These oxoarylations were also achieved satisfactorily in intermolecular three‐component oxidations, including diverse alkenyldiazo esters, nitriles, and pyridine‐based oxides.     

A visual strip sensor for determination of iron

A visual strip has been developed for sensing iron in different aqueous samples like natural water and fruit juices. The sensor has been synthesized by UV-radiation induced graft polymerization of acrylamide monomer in microporous poly(propylene) base. For physical immobilization of iron selective reagent, the in situ polymerization of acrylamide has been carried out in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline. The loaded strip on interaction with Fe(II) in aqueous solution turned into orange red color and the intensity of the color was found to be directly proportional to the amount of Fe(II) in the aqueous sample. The minimal sensor response with naked eye was found for 50 ng mL⁻¹ of Fe in 15 min of interaction. However, as low as 20 ng mL⁻¹ Fe could be quantified using a spectrophotometer. The detection limit calculated using the 3s/S criteria, where ‘s’ is the standard deviation of the absorbance of blank reagent loaded strip and ‘S’ is the slope of the linear calibration plot, was 1.0 ng mL⁻¹. The strip was applied to measure Fe in a variety of samples such as ground water and fruit juices.     

Einstein<Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis>-coefficients for rotational transitions in the ring-chain isomer of C<Subscript>5</Subscript>H<Subscript>2</Subscript>

Laboratory formation of four isomers of C⁵H² molecule is reported and detection of the ring-chain isomer (isomer 1) of C₅H₂ in cosmic objects has been suggested. For identification of a molecule in cosmic objects, one of the required input data is EinsteinA-coefficients (radiative transition probabilities) for the molecule. Here, we report EinsteinA-coefficients for electric dipole transitions in the ring-chain isomer of C₅H₂ among the rotational levels of the ground electronic and ground vibrational states up to 21 cm⁻¹.     

Microwave promoted methylation of plant polysaccharides

O-Methylation is of outstanding importance in structural polysaccharide chemistry. A novel method for the methylation of polysaccharides using microwave (MW) irradiation is described. Seed gum from Cyamopsis tetragonolobus (Guar) was fully methylated with dimethyl sulphate and sodium hydroxide using 100% microwave power for 4 min in 68% yield. The completely methylated seed gum thus obtained was hydrolyzed by 70% formic acid followed by 0.5N H₂SO₄ under full microwave power for 1.16 and 1.66 min, respectively. The partially methylated monosaccharides were separated and identified.
